Frequently Asked Questions
Baja Workshops? MEA Online? Sabbatical Sessions? How do you begin the modern elder journey? We do our best to make it easy for you to envision yourself in one of our programs.
What is the Modern Elder Academy?
MEA is on a mission to build a community of inspired and empowered mid-lifers and reframe midlife from a crisis to a calling. As the world’s first midlife wisdom school, MEA offers all-inclusive workshops and sabbaticals that provide the education and tools to help people feel relevant, with continued and clarified purpose, in midlife. In addition to our core weekly workshop intensives, we offer extended sabbaticals, an eight-week online program, and an alumni membership program. MEA is a social venture committed to socio-economic diversity, offering scholarships to over 50% of workshop attendees, and accessible rates to sabbatical and online participants. As a result, the MEA community is quite diverse including firefighters, physical therapists, software engineers, university professors and CEOs and more.
How do I know which MEA program is best-suited for my needs?
All of our programs address transitions in midlife and beyond. The Baja campus experience is in-person and features the natural environment as one of our teachers. But connecting online has its own unique benefits and we’re able to offer several expert guest faculty in this digital environment.
Baja Workshops are best-suited for those seeking a catalyst for transformation in their lives and deeper connection with like-minded folks.
MEA Online is meaningful for those facing transitions and seeking community but who may not be able to travel to our Baja, Mexico campus.
Sabbatical Sessions are perfect for someone who wants to combine a relaxing beach getaway with a light amount of learning and a big dose of community.
What happens after I graduate from an MEA program? Is there an alumni network?
Yes! Perhaps the number one thing we hear from people is the joyful connections that are made in their experiences after they attend MEA. We have an incredibly active and engaged community of 3,000+ alumni from 40 countries who continue to gather as new friends, cohorts, regional groups, in all-alumni events, and via our Alumni Membership Program that offers additional benefits of connection on personal and professional topics.
What does the future of the Modern Elder Academy look like?
The Modern Elder Movement is growing. And so are we! MEA’s first U.S. location will open in the Galisteo Basin near Santa Fe, New Mexico in 2023 and we continue to develop more programs to experience in person and online.
I’m not aspiring to be elderly. Why are you called the Modern Elder Academy?
We’re reclaiming the word “elder” because, frankly, elders are fantastic. Elders are people who’ve been around the block and have deep wells of wisdom to share with the world. What’s more, the word "elder" is a relative term. If you're a 45-year-old surrounded by 25-year-olds, you're an elder in that group. More and more of us are finding ourselves in situations and organizations like this.
While “elderly” refers to years lived on the planet, “elder” refers to what we do with those years. “Modern elders” reflect on what they’ve learned and incorporate it into their relationships with younger generations. A modern elder is also curious, with a desire for learning, connection, understanding and relevance as both mentor and intern, sage and student, teacher and learner, all at the same time.
What kind of people attend the Modern Elder Academy?
The majority of our students are between 45-65 years old (and we’ve had plenty of students in their 30s and up to their late 80s), fluent in English, and hail from diverse backgrounds all over the world. Their common thread is that they’re experiencing personal and professional changes in life — re-entering the workforce, transitioning out of a career, job, or family role, and more.
